Sierra Lerback makes history!

On Sunday the 13th March, 2022 history was made at the Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Hawaiin-born Aussie, partner of Zye Norris, and local Noosa shredder Sierra Lerback beat a field of 80% men to claim the prestigious Old Mal in fun waves at First Point on Finals Day of the Festival.

Sierra by no means fluked this result with absent surfers in poor conditions. All the big names were there and the waves were more than contestable at First Point with several big scores dropping all day.

Fellow Deus superstars, Jared Mell, Tom Morat & husband Zye were all competing, not to mention current world #2 Harrison Roach who claimed Lerbacks win to be a highlight of his career, coming in 2nd to his friend in the Festival’s most prestigious division.

Sierra’s win was timely in a Festival backed by a strong focus on women and equality across the board with prize money. It also opened up the conversation again among the sports top names like Joel Tudor, Devon Howard and Robert ‘wingnut’ Weaver who have all cried out in recent times for a WSL longboard tour back on the agenda as a win for surfing in general.

Could this result be the turning point for longboarding having a rightful place on the world stage again?

Time will tell. In the meantime, a huge congratulations to Sierra for her victory.
